heaving cement slabs

a reader asked:

I've got the typical cracked floors in my 11th and Wengert home and am looking to finally get it fixed. Has anyone gone through this recently and can suggest a contractor? Also, how much can I expect this to cost per square foot? Any info will help. Thanks.

I'd love to see some comments from those who have the problem and those who've fixed it.
I'll give my 3 cents worth in a post tomorrow.

we have a big hump in our living room too. It was there when we moved in. When we put down new carpet, we did double pad around it and a single layer over it. You can't really see it now, but you can kind of feel it still if you walk over it, but the coffee table took care of that.

came back to this post to say we just leveled our "hump" with a double layer of carpet pad around it, and a single layer over it. then the new carpet, and a coffee table on top. No one knows it's there but us.

I've seen all kinds of ways to deal with it. The carpet padding idea was a first though. Cement grinders can level it and then cement repair filler in the cracks will hold up for many years with carpet, but I wouldn't put tile down as it will crack when the hump comes back.

oh, and "cousin Joe" that was funny. I've got a brother Joe who does instant elvis! I wrote about him in an earlier post.

the best way to deal with it is to saw the cement of the slab back to as close as you can get to the walls. then you Jack hammer out the middle, and pour a new slab and finish smooth. Best left to a professional.

I'm writing a post about the subject to publish tomorrow.

I live in a house built in 1958, we had to have the entire slab removed and replaced because it only gets worse. Contractors removed everything up to 6" from the bearing walls, dug down two feet, filled with gravel and repoured the concrete. It's a problem in the downtown homes.
