Mansard Roofs

were an architecural way to hide the flatness of a roof line, and add some height and body to a flat roof home. There's lots of variations, and here are a few of them from Vintage Vegas.

Of course, I did a Google search for "mansard roof", and discovered way more information than my brain has room for.

The most amusing article and the one with the most pictures is HERE.

The Money Quote..."Although the intention was to add class by echoing a 19th Century French style, the look quickly became synonymous with fast-service roadside schlock. The effectiveness of this symbolism made it especially perverse when remodelers and homebuilders starting slapping on mansards to add nuance and class to residential designs"
