One of my favorites is the Ocotillo. They're easy to grow, get really big, and make a great centerpiece for that xeroscape that you've been thinking about.
There's some really nice ones on Oakey in the Eldorado Preparatory Academy Parking lot.
Did a little Google searching and found some good sites about them.
