McNeil Is One Of Our Favorite Neighborhoods in Las Vegas's Vintage Vegas

I got a real shock yesterday when driving thru McNeil. One of the homes we've been watching had a fire. We were watching it because it was being rebuilt, though the new front didn't match the home) and updated.

The contractor we talked to didn't know how the fire started, but he's tearing the house down completely so now there'll be a new house on the lot. The property is on Colanthe at Strong, and well worth doing a regular drive by to see how it progresses. We sure hope they're not about to go build a new suburban "Mediterranean".

We'd been talking to the owner about how a square box, crown molding and an arch over the door didn't fit or look right on a classic "Cinderella" Ranch. He had never thought about it before. He was trying to make the house more 2007 suburbia. The term for that is "re-MUDDLE". Looks like now he'll get a do over. These 2 pictures are the front of the house when he bought it last year (from the MLS) and after the fire showing the "box".

Susan and I were BAFFLED

when we realized that there are 13 different brass cabinet knobs in this kitchen. There's about 30 altogether, and there were 2 or 3 of each one, but with no ryhme or reason, or symetry to how they were placed. We wondered if it was a collection? Maybe a mistake? maybe they were in the bargain bin at home depot, and there weren't enough to do them all the same?

We found these in a Sunrise Villa townhome. You'll have to click on the photos to see them blown up to see what I mean.

It's hard to screw up a dimensional roof, but....

Well, the point of dimensional composition shingle is that there won't be a pattern, and it provides texture and shadowing and color that is absent from traditional composition roofing.

And then to compound the error, discover it when you're already about 10 rows up and don't go back and fix it.

(click the picture, it's worth it).

how NOT to finish off the laminate flooring

It's worth the extra clicks to see these full screen. (Click any photo)

We find the funniest things in VVV. Do it yourself ought to imply that you "know how" to do it yourself. If not, it's best to hire it out!

Last time I was at HD/Lowes, they sold 1/4 round molding. Must have been out of it that day.

and from the same house, though I could have made another post out of it, here's one of the worst Ceramic tile jobs I've ever seen. It's listed for sale, and the flyer says "beautifully remolded" (sic)Well, we did promise you the good and bad, beautiful and ugly.

If you're going to expand your kitchen

It's really best to match the wood and countertops. Having to match the side board for the breakfast nook to the rest of the kitchen, or pull it out alltogether, which would mess up the parquet flooring that doesn't go under the sideboard, but does run thru the rest of the house is a real problem for the buyer who loves the rest of this home.

look close or click on the picture to see a full screen view to better see what I'm talking about.
