An Extraordinary Original 1958 Custom Home In Vintage Las Vegas

Every element that was installed in 1958 is intact. The wool shag carpet, the hot pink counters, the mushroom cloud lights, in fact all of it. There's a turquoise bathroom and a black and maroon one, as well as the ubiquitous pink one.

The pool is 20x40, the exterior is brick, and the construction is post and beam mid-mod.

Have You Dreamed of Owning All Original Mid Century Modern Home?

It can be seen with a signed buyer broker agreement only, as it is not listed and not being advertised. But it is for sale for 535,000.
Call or email me if you believe that having an original mid century modern custom home would be mega-cool.

From a different angle....

I've driven east on St. Louis a hundred times before, but till yesterday I've never driven north on Atlantic off of Sahara to catch a different view of the new State Employment Services office building.

I love the mid-mod lines of the folded roof, the broad overhangs and colors. It just doesn't look the same from the side on St. Louis.

What NOT TO DO to a Fran Park mid-mod

(or any other for that matter) The first picture is the original window configuration on a home that's begging for a buyer who "gets it". The second picture is an abomination of the whole concept of mid-mod.

Stunning Paradise Palms Mid-Mod (part 1, the back yard)

A Paradise Palms regular reader sent us pictures of the interior and back yard of their personal Mid-Mod Masterpiece. I'm publishing the back yard today, and the interior tomorrow.

If we're going to save our neighborhoods it's important for us to also show the world the interiors and back yards. We invite our readers to share photos or to invite us over to take the pictures.

This is a great example of the wonderful Vintage Vegas homes in Paradise Palms. Enjoy!

And, they tell me the casino neon sign (which came from the Boardwalk Hotel) lights up the whole yard with a tourquoise glow at night!

The Susan Saga (Chapter 10)

We have a new "champion". Susan OOOOOOHs and AAAAAAAHs more than I DO!

(about really great 50's and 60's architecture, great landscapings, and so many of the other elements of Vintage Vegas that I showed her yesterday as we started to explore neighborhoods.

Lifestyle-wise, she's realizing that townhomes like Braewood, Heritage Square South, and the Sunrise Villas hold a great appeal to her after spending years taking care of a 1/2 acre of lawn and landscape. Access to a pool for an occasional swim doesn't mean she actually has to own one to be happy. A patio to sit on and a Bar-B-Q are really the only backyard amenities that she really needs.

And, we took care of her school district "business" such as fingerprints and discovery that she hasn't been tested for TB yet. That took us to the ED SHED on Flamingo east of Eastern.

It's truly one of the finest mid century modern buildings in all of Las Vegas. Of course, it has concrete block screens, (and a so far, one of a kind patterns) folded roof, walls of glass, terrific lighting fixtures hanging under the folded roof, enormous columns and empty, but extremely good looking planters.

In 1990 addition, I think I found what could become a new obsession, OFFSET BRICKWORK! I can think of a dozen good examples in Vintage Vegas, and I've never taken a picture, at least on purpose, of a single uniquely patterned wall of brick I'll get to work on collecting them.

some bonus shots from previous posts

Some of the "ONE OF A KIND" block patterns that I only found in one location.

The Rexford:

One of the best mid-mod apartment buildings in town is actually a "CO-OP". That is, you don't own your unit. You own a share of the corporation that owns the building, and each share comes with the right to use a designated unit.

Except for it's architectural beauty, I've never paid it much mind, but I've had 2 people ask me about it recently, so I've had to do some homework. I'm impressed. Only 22 units, age restricted, all wrap around the center pool.

And then there's the windows! Long and graceful in the living rooms. In the bathrooms and kitchens they're jaolosy type, except the panes are fixed and the bottom "shelf" of the middle slanted window opens downward to let in the fresh air. I've never seen anything like them EVER.
The Rexford graces the corner of Oakey and Rexford, one block east of the strip. Hard to miss, and hard to forget.

Infamous disrepair

On the way back from Summerlin, I zigged when I usually zag and lo and behold, someone was standing in the driveway of one of the MYSTERY MID MODS on Rancho just south of Charleston!

I've been wanting to see inside for YEARS, and at least finally got into one of them.

There's lots of great features as you can see, but the prize is the round wrought iron gazebo awning in the back yard.

They're slowly working their way thru the house, and hope to work on the front this fall when it cools off.

The other one is at the corner of Rancho and Mason. Folded Roof, great lines and a really bad shed roof pop out bay window that I certainly hope will be removed one day, or at least made to look like it belongs on the house.

Speaking of Paradise Palms

These are my 2 favorite houses on Pawnee Drive (east off of Spencer).

The one on the left has great colors, swirls of shrubery, and the lines of the house are proudly shown off. What's not to love.

The one below is totally unique, though not original. I love the veritical windows, the grass intentionally growing thru the widely spaced paver driveway, and the rustic look. It's still mid-mod, but but doesn't look like a Palmer and Kessel anymore.

(In case you didn't realize it, you can click on any picture to see a full screen shot of it in a new window)

And I thought mine was big

My Organ Pipe and Old Man cactii, that is. We found these over in Paradise Palms in one of the three often ignored cul-de-sacs that run south off of Desert Inn. They're called Yuma, Aztec, and Ayita Circles. The corner houses have gone commercial, since they side up to Desert Inn, and the end houses back onto the golf courses.

One of the reasons they're ignored is that they have a little more street noise than anything else in Paradise Palms which tends to be very quiet due to to the overwide streets and big trees, large lots and the golf course.

In fact, on Yuma Circle, where I found the extremely tall cactii, I also found 2 homes (I think) with so much greenery that it's hard to believe there's a house hiding behind them. The view is much better on the back side since they have golf course frontage.
The reason I got to Yuma Circle today was to look at a classic "Palmer and Kessel" folded roof mid-mod that came on the market. Carol McLeod from Horizon properties has given me permission to tell about it, and tomorrow it will be one of our featured properties. I needed to see it because somewhere in someone's "uninformed" past, the carport was closed in with concrete block to create a fortress prison look to the once impressive Mid-Mod. I had to see if it could be restored to it's former glory. And the good news is....THAT IT CAN! The bones and angles and fireplace and kitchen are well preserved, the views and view deck are great, and all that really needs to be done is to get the carport back to the way it was meant to be. Interior photos will be up tomorrow in the featured homes.
All that and I was only on one cul-de-sac! Who says there's nothing to talk about in Vintage Vegas? Not me!

Atomic Age Alliance meeting at the PINBALL MUSEUM

You didn't know there was a PINBALL MUSEUM in Las Vegas

Well tonight (sorry for the short notice) you can check out the ATOMIC AGE ALLIANCE and the Pinball Museum at the same time.

Meeting starts "around" 7 with free pinball afterwards.

The museum is at 3330 E. Tropicana, Las Vegas NV 89121 next to the dollar cinema at Pecos.

From the AAA website: "a brand new Preservation/Education group born out of Las Vegas to not only support ongoing preservation efforts, but also to create awareness for the style/genre of MidMod in new design and architecture."

Drop dead serious MID MOD

Talk about "getting it". Actually, when I sold these buyers the property in Scotch 80's 4 years ago, they were the first one's to tell me about the "Eichler Homes" of Southern and Northern California, and even though I owned and lived in one, they were the first people to use the term "mid century modern" on me. Now it's like every 5th thing out of my mouth. The pictures can speak for themselves. Congratulation on saving a classic example.

Las Vegas has it's own mid-mod revival and preservation club called Atomic Age Alliance

Interior Elements Part ??

Three way round fire places don't exist out in the suburbs.

We know of several in Vintage Vegas, and you can see one for yourself if you're coming to the "UncleJackPot" party on June 16th. 8-11pm.

There's still time to enter the HISTORY HUNT contest for the $1000.00 drawing. Direction are in the left hand column.

All of our readers are invited. Hope to see you there. We're throwing the Party at Ben Nation's mid-mod at 1908 Chapman.
